Why losing your best friend hurts more than any break up
Matthew Perry died, so I wrote a confessional about loss and friendship
Dear Jasper,
I wrote the following story for The Times yesterday, because they asked me to. I was excited because a) I need the money, b) I love writing for the Times and c) because this is my favourite topic.
But the editor had got confused with the brief. She wanted a story about someone whose best friend had DIED, pegged to the news that Matthew Perry died. She thought my best friend, who I’d written about before, had died. But she didn’t die. We fell out and she decided to never talk to me again. I mean, she may as well have died, but technically she is still living.
So I wrote the piece in a hurried, excited frenzy and I was actually pleased with it and then I sent it to the editor and she said ‘oh, but she didn’t die?’ and couldn’t publish the story or pay me. Fuck. So here it is.
